“The sense of community here is what I like best. I love feeling like this is my family and my home away from home.” Amy Palmisano, Junior, majoring in Behavioral Health/Family Studies

Location & Climate

The campus of Southwestern College is located in the scenic Paradise Valley area twelve miles north of downtown Phoenix.  The setting is a valley surrounded by picturesque mountains in the midst of the distinctive semi-arid environment of Arizona.

Phoenix, the capital of Arizona, has an estimated population of over 1,500,000 making it the fifth largest city in the United States, as well as the largest state capital. The Phoenix metropolitan area, also known as the Valley of the Sun, is a rapidly growing metropolis of over four million people and is the center of influence for a vast area of the Southwest.

The climate in Phoenix ranges from an average maximum temperature of 65.9° in January to 106° in July.  We enjoy over 200 days a year with a clear blue sky with only 7.7 inches of annual rain.

Our beautiful climate and location encourage visits to a multitude of outstanding tourist attractions such as the Grand Canyon, Monument Valley, Sedona, Roosevelt Dam, Lakes Havasu, Mead, and Powell, the Petrified Forest, Montezuma's Castle, and London Bridge. Many others are in easy driving range. The winter resort areas of Phoenix, Tucson, and Mesa, and the opportunity to go “south of the border” into Mexico, add further interest.

The cultural features of the Phoenix area are many and varied, including the Heard Museum, Phoenix Art Museum, Desert Botanical Garden, Phoenix Symphony, Phoenix Zoo, and the modern, spacious Phoenix Central Library. Other institutions of higher learning in close proximity are Arizona State University and several community and private colleges.

Phoenix is also the home of numerous professional sports teams, including the Arizona Cardinals (NFL),  Phoenix Suns (NBA), Phoenix Mercury (WNBA), Coyotes (NHL), Diamondbacks (MLB), Arizona Rattlers (AFL), Arizona Sting (NLL), and the Arizona Sahuaros (USASA).

If baseball is something you enjoy, check out the Cactus League spring training camps for professional baseball teams.  Nine pro-teams have spring training in the Phoenix area; including the Anaheim Angels, Chicago Cubs, Kansas City Royals, Milwaukee Brewers, Oakland Athletics, San Diego Padres, San Francisco Giants, Seattle Mariners, and the Texas Rangers.  In Tucson, three teams train including the Arizona Diamondbacks, Chicago White Sox, and the Colorado Rockies.
